1. General information
This subject offers an overview of American, pre-Columbian and Hispanic Art, beginning with the most outstanding artistic manifestations of the pre-Columbian cultures, from Mesoamerica to the Andean area covering the Formative, Classic and Post-Classic periods, and then approaching the most outstanding stages of Hispano-American art.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of United Nations (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement. And, specifically, with the following SDGs: Goal 4: Quality Education; 5. Gender Equality. 10 Reduction of the inequalities; 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Alliances to Achieve Objectives.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
-Is able to analyse, abstract and synthesize the main characteristics of the artistic production of the American continent during pre-Columbian and colonial times (referred to CG01)
-Is able to acquire training in a foreign language (through the consultation and reading of specialized bibliography) and to show ability in the effective use of ICT in the development and presentation of the work assigned in relation to the subject (referred to CG05)
-Is able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the main artistic languages of the American continent (architecture, sculpture, painting and decorative arts), as well as their characteristics, terminology, techniques and artistic creation processes (referred to CE03).
-Is able to demonstrate a critical and reflective knowledge of the sources, characteristics, functions, meanings, and foundations of American Art in the course of time, as well as the different methodologies for its interpretation (referred to CE04)
-Is able to demonstrate a knowledge of the main artistic styles, cultures and movements of the American continent during pre-Columbian and colonial times, along with their artists and their most significant works, in the context of other cultures and territories (referred to CE05)
-Is capable of observing, analysing, describing and commenting on a work of art, applying the scientific method of the discipline (referred to CE06).
-Is able to catalogue an artistic work of the pre-Columbian and colonial period and place it in the cultural sphere, historical period, style, movements or tendency to which it belongs and, if applicable, in the global production of its author (referred to CE07),
-Is able to interpret a work of art through the consideration of its aesthetic values, the reflection on its form, function and meaning, and the different methodologies of interpretation (from archaeological to anthropological or art history), always with reference to the historical and cultural context of the American continent (referred to CE08).
-Is able to carry out, in accordance with the scientific method of the subject, an individual or collective work in which they demonstrates the ability to search, analyse, organize, synthesize and interpret the information on the subject (referring to CE13).

Topic 2. The Olmecs.
Topic 3. Cultures of Central America.
Topic 4. The cultures of Ecuador and Peru.
Topic 5. The art of Teotihuacan.
Topic 6. Mayan culture.
Topic 7. Quimbaya, Mochica, Nazca and Tiahuanaco cultures.
Topic 8. Aztecs.
Topic 9. The Incas.
Topic 10. The cultural encounter.
Topic 11. The urbanism of the new cities.
Topic 12. Missions.
Topic 13. The new American cathedrals.
Topic 14. The Hispano-American Baroque.
Topic 15. Prevalences in the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
4. Academic activities
The subject is fundamentally oriented to the establishment of the theoretical and practical bases of the study of the work of art of pre-Columbian and colonial times. To this end, the program includes the following activities:
1) Theoretical classes in the classroom.
2) Practical classes in different formats in the classroom or outside the classroom.
3) Study and personal work.
4) Tutorials: Guidance, individualized and in small groups, as well as the review of the tasks assigned to the student.
5) Assessment tests.
5. Assessment system
First call
Global assessment on the dates established in the academic calendar. It includes:
a) Written exam or test (60%): Duration: 2 hours. Two parts: a) Development of a topic (50% of the total grade of the exam); b) Identification and commentary of two works explained in class (50% of the total grade of the exam).
b) Practice report (20%): Duration: up to 30 minutes. Written test of a practical nature in which the student will answer a series of questions both cataloguing works and definitions seen in class.
c) Individual work (20%): Duration: up to 30 minutes. One or more questions relating to a text that has been provided or quoted by the teacher during the term will be answered in writing. At the beginning of the term, students will be informed in detail about the guidelines for each exercise.
General assessment criteria It will be valued that the student makes an orderly, well-structured and reasoned presentation.
Personal contribution will also be valued, based on individual work (readings and use of computer resources recommended), as well as the adequate use of artistic terminology, good presentation and formal and orthographic correctness.
